1.the spread of railways from the 1850's created a new demand. railway were essential for colonial trade nd for the movement of imperial troops. to run locomotives .wood was needed as a fuel and to lay railways lines sleepers were essential for hold the tracks together.
2.from 1860's railway network expanded rapidly. as the length of railway track expanded a very large no. of trees were felled.
