Why did Franz forget the ruler and strictness of his teacher ?

when franz came into the school he saw a silence like sunday morning ,he already late for class , when franz came into the class the teacher did not scold him for being late and said him to sit on his bench , he saw the empty last seats were filled with old villagers ,he did not understood the matter than m hamel {his teacher} told that today is the last day of french language .the orders came from berlin that german language will be taught to the students instead of french beacuse we lost the war . than franz realise that he did not study properly his language till now and thought that his teacher was right he always said him to study but i ignored . his set of mind change towards his teacher
