The French landed in Vietnam in 1858 and by 1887 almost Indo-China was formed.
The French also had a 'Civilising Mission' .
It is under this mission that the French wanted to educate Vietnamese . They needed a working force for them.
Also, in the name modernization, the French were trying to remove the Chinese influence on Vietnamese.
The French wanted to create an 'Asiayic France' in Vietnam by overshadowing Vietnamese culture by the French culture.
They adopted different means to achieve this success.
