Gandhi Ji adopted salt as a symbol of mass movement due to the following reason:-

  • British had established their monopoly on salt and imposed the salt tax.
  • Salt is the basic ingredient of food and it is equally required by all the citizens of the country. Gandhi Ji thought that they should raise their voice against this act of the British.
  • So, he launched Civil Disobedience Movement or 'Satyagrah' on 12th March 1930 to defy the salt law.
