But Gandhiji proved too wise for them. He at once ended the deadlock by accepting what the planters wanted. He Explained that the amount of the refund was not important. The landlord's had to surrender some of their money and with it their prestige. So far the British planters had been behaving as lords above the law. But now the peasants saw that they had rights and also their defenders.
