Since there was shortage of cotton in America, Britishers used to buy cotton from Indians at very cheap rates, manufactured clothes with it, and sold out the same clothes to Indians at a very high cost.

To counter-attack that, Mahatma Gandhi started the Khadi Movement to boycott any foreign clothes. With that aim, he asked Indians to spin khadi on their own.

By doing this, Mahatma Gandhi wanted to not only break the monopoly of Britishers, but also create emploment for Indian villagers.

Over time, the spinning wheel became an icon of the Swadeshi movement.
