Gandhi ji always wanted the non - cooperation movement to remain non violent in nature. But to due severe British repressions towards indians associated with the movement and the follow up of agitated mob by burning a police station with it's constables in chauri-chaura(Gorakhpur District, UP) led Gandhi ji to believe that people were not yet ready and had not yet understood the method of non-violence. Hence,he withdraw the non-cooperation movement in February 1922.
