Mahatma Gandhi found in salt a Powerful symbol that could unite the nation. Salt was something consumed by both rich and poor a like , and it was the most essential items of the food. The tax on salt and the government monopoly over its production, Mahatma Gandhi declared, revealed the most oppressive face of British rule.

Salt was chosen as the central formula in civil disobedience moment because it was a commodity that every Indian could relate, be it poor, middle class, rich, dalits or brahman all used salt alike.

Gandhi ji wanted to make the people aware about the oppressive policies which in this case was the ban on manufacturing of salt . He had a symbol in salt which had the potential to unite each and every community in India which had been a major shortcoming of the earlier Non-Cooperation Movement.
