well u definitely know about colonial India....
making citizens as slaves and making rules which includes salt law
there was no rights for Indians to collect salt and therefore Gandhiji as part of civil disobedience act he marched with a group of his followers to Dandi a costalvillage in Gujarat to break salt law..

Because
Salt was something which everyone used
Salt also showed the oppressive side of british as they imposed tax on it
It also provides wider base to their movements
