Gandhiji choose to break the salt law because in his view, it was sinful to tax salt since it is such as essential item of our food that is used by the rich or the poor person in the same quantity.

Answer:

When the East India Company took charge of India- it heavily increased tax on salt. In 1858, the Crown took over the country from the company but the salt tax was not revoked. Indians were burdened by this as salt had become a sort of luxury item. In 1930, Mahatma Gandhi decided to break the salt law as a symbol of civil disobedience.
