The Khilafat Movement began in 1919, just after the First World War, and lasted until 1924. The initial goal of the movement was to convince the British to support the Caliph (successor of the prophet Mohammad and a religious leader) of Islam, who was an Ottoman Sultan seeking to retain power after the fall of the Ottoman Empire.
