Gandhiji delayed Rajkumar Shukla for helping him on the Champaran issue because Gandhiji was very busy at that time. He had to go to several parts of India and he had several engagements.

But Rajkumar Shukla followed Gandhiji wherever he went. Impressed by Shukla's tenacity, Gandhiji asked him to meet him in Calcutta. From there, they went to Champaran. Shukla wanted Gandhiji to see the miserable plight of the sharecroppers of Champaran.
