Khilafat movement is also known as non-cooperation movement which was against British ers. Representative of Congress of that time was Gandhi ji who started this campaign against britishers. Non-cooperation movement meant that : people will no more support or co-operate with British Government or stay under the rule of this government. Gandhi ji wanted an India which had freedom and is governed by a systematic and democratic government that's why Gandhi ji supported Khilafat movement.

Khilafat movement has it's origin in the first world war. Turkey was among the defeated nations after the war. As a result It was partitioned and the sultan of Turkey was deprived of his most of his power. Muslims everywhere wanted to restore the sultan to his position as he was regarded as their spiritual head or khalifa. In India the khilafat movement was started under the Ali Brothers. Maulana Mohammed Ali and Shaukat Ali. Gandhi ji support it because it is a good opportunity to forge HINDU- MUSLIM unity.
