The conflict of duties that Gandhi faced was that on the one hand he did not want to set a bad example as a lawbreaker and on the other hand to render the humanitarian and national service for which he had come. He disregarded the order to leave not due to a lack of respect for lawful authority but out of a higher moral and ethical concern
