Hampi is
situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra River. It was the capital of the
Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th century. It is situated on the banks of the
Tungabhadra River.  Accounts of the
Persian and European, particularly Portuguese travellers state that Hampi was a
prosperous, wealthy and grand city. It had numerous temples, farms and trading
markets. Hampi - Vijayanagara was the world's second largest medieval-era city
after Beijing in 1500 CE. It was probably India's richest city at that time and
attracted traders from Persia and Portugal.

The
Vijayanagara rulers fostered developments in arts and intellectual pursuits.
They invested in agriculture, waterworks, roads, religious buildings and public
infrastructure. So the city of Hampi prospered
