As Helen lowered herself into the cool water, she felt the great billows rock and sink and the buoyant motion of the water filling her with an exquisite, quivering joy. Suddenly her ecstasy gave away to terror when the sea began to play with her. She tried to grasp for some support but in vain, the waves seem to be playing a game of tossing her about from one place to another. The good, firm earth slipped from her feet and everything seemed to shut out from their strange all-enveloping element-life, air, warmth and love. However, the sea seemed to have grown wary of its new toy and threw her back on the shore. In another instant, Helen embraced her teacher. But as soon as she had sufficiently recovered from her panic, she demanded to know who had put salt in the water. The question meant that it was because of the salt that she had been flung back.
