Why did Helen's parents take her to Baltimore? what happened there?

When Helen turned six years old, her parents decided to take her to Baltimore to a renowned oculist, Dr. Chisholm to see if anything could be done for her eyes.  

When they reached there, the doctor examined Helen and said nothing could be done to restore Helen’s vision. But he said Helen could be educated; and advised her parents to consult Dr. Graham Bell who could provide them with information regarding schools for deaf and blind children. So, Helen’s parents took Helen to Dr. Graham Bell.
