Why did helen, the ghost appear in sections in the shady plot?

Two reasons are there for helen to appear in bits and pieces
1. Helen thought that john was too busy in thinking for a story. To grasp his attention towards her she appears in bits and pieces.
2. Helen by virtue is actually a ghost and maybe she would have thought that if she appears in bits and pieces he may get feared and might stop the usage of ouija board .
Hence Helen appeared in bits and pieces.
