Why did Henry IV beg the pope for forgiveness? He wanted to gain more control as emperor. He realized the great power of the Church. He recognized that he had committed a sin. He had few resources to fight off challengers.

As Henry was given the throne at a very young age, he managed to cut good ties with the church but later realized that the Church held great power and that he could be overthrown by the church if they wanted it to be so.That is why Henry decided to go to the Pope and apologize so he could in turn, be forgiven.
