The historians regard the history of modern period in India as the history of the colonial period because it was colonized by British from 1757 to 1947. The British turned India into a colony of supply of raw materials and market of finished goods.

The Indians were oppressed politically, economically and socially by the British and there was no liberty, democracy and freedom during this period. The people were denied their basic rights and freedom.
