Why did Holmes send a telegram to the postmaster at Grimpen?​

To find out if Barrymore's at Baskerville Hall or not, they send him a telegram (or wire). They send one to the postmaster too, asking him to send back the other one if Barrymore's not there. "That's so," said Baskerville.
