Hongwu felt that a strong military was necessary to prevent a rebellion by the Mongols. The Mongols were China's neighbor to the north and now be would be called modern-day Mongolia and Manchuria (northern China). Even though they had been driven away, Hongwu knew they still posed a threat. He consolidated a huge army and the army was also taught how to grow crops in case their military positions became sedentary. However, in the end they were still defeated.

Answer:

Hongwu understood that after being driven out of China, the Mongols still constituted a serious danger of invasion.

Explanation:

  • He reevaluated the traditional Confucian perspective of the military as being subordinate to the scholar class because he thought it was crucial to have a strong military.
  • The Wei-so military organisation, which was similar to the Fu-ping system used during the Tang Dynasty, was used by Hongwu to maintain a strong army.
  • Ming Shih Gao asserts that the founder of the Ming Dynasty established the Wei-so system with the goal of maintaining a powerful army while preventing the development of close relationships between commanding commanders and the troops.

The troops' own military districts were also used for military training.
