Answer:

Horace Danby, was a good and respectable citizen, but not completely honest. He liked to read the precious and rare books. He made locks and earned money, but, his earnings were not as such that he could buy the rate and expensive books. So, to fulfill his desire, he stole the rare and expensive books from those who were rich and wealthy. He stole only once in a year.

So, once he got the information that a wealthy family had left to see the movie, along with the servants. That is when, he decided to go and steal the rare and expensive books from that house, at Shotover Grange. The housekeeper hanged the key and went away with that family to the movies and then he made the plan to steal books from that house.
