Because ,he doesn't have any idea to fulfil colonels order to earn 10,000 pounds .and to catch the hands of Laura in marriage

Hughie wanted to get married to Laura Merton.
Her father, a retired Colonel, despite of being fond of Hughie, have asked Hughie to earn ten thousand pounds, before he would think about approving Hughie for her daughter.
But the inability to fulfill the condition made Hughie to look very glum and curse himself.
