Answer:

Everyone who has answered thus far has failed to take their answer to its natural end. The majority of people have commented that ‘protection’ is why humans initially covered up their private parts. This is a very intuitive hypothesis, but is incorrect, and I will offer examples as to why.

For starters, one must ask themselves why animals do not wear clothes. Why do humans, out of all the animals on the planet wear clothes? Even animals with higher intelligence and opposable thumbs, such as gorillas, do not create garments. Animals that have been on this planet longer than the human race, have not evolved into making clothes - even though it would afford them the same protection.

Even further down the rabbit hole - why do we create colorful clothes? Why are our clothes decorative? We not only make garments, but we frequently sacrifice their protective ability in exchange for beauty.

Let’s continue - why do we typically only not wear clothes when others aren’t around? Even in our own home, unless we are home alone or simply there with a spouse (on occasion), we usually keep our clothes on.

I believe all of these questions point us toward a satisfactory answer, and that is - shame. Humans, inherently, wrestle with pride and insecurity, confidence and anxiety - we are moral agents capable of feeling shame. We constantly compare ourselves to others, and in the end everyone will always find a reason to come up short in the looks department. So we clothe ourselves, and we keep our naked bodies to ourselves or in dimly lit rooms as we make love with our spouses. We wear designer garments, and rings, and bracelets, and do our hair, and whiten our teeth, in an effort to exude beauty and confidence.

This all makes decent sense, and happens to fit into the narrative Judaism and Christianity offers us - that prior to the fall of man, we did not wear clothes, but after we sinned we became ‘aware’ of our nakedness, were ashamed, and tried to cover ourselves in an effort to end our shame.
