India adopted democratic republic. In a democratic governing system, there are rights for people. There can be any number of political parties.  Anyone can start a political party. Also, multi-party system is better than two party system in some ways in the sense that it gives people to follow their own  political philosophy.

Multi-party system gives political freedom. It gives more penetration into people's difficulties and the people are better represented.

India is very large with multiple kinds of people. Demographic features vary a lot. The cultures, religions, regional changes all result in different types of people, and different types of social problems to people.  Different languages spoken by people of different regions makes it necessary and practical to have multiple parties representing people.

One party rule could create a problem like monopoly or dictatorship.
