India established itself as a democratic nation to uphold the ideals of secularism and sovereignty.

After the creation of Pakistan by dividing it from India, there prevailed a very chaotic situation in India.

Jawaharlal Nehru who became the first prime minister of independent India opted for a democratic government to give equal rights to the all sections of the society in the selection as well as participation in the state affairs.

And hence, in 1950 the new constitution came into force which declared India as a democratic country.
