The Indian Rebellion of 1857 had numerous administrative, commercial, aggressive, spiritual and charitable causes. The fire that commenced to a revolution in various sepoy organizations was the number of distinct gunpowder cartridges for the Enfield rifle. A suggestion was developed that the cartridges were obtained from cow and pig fat.

There were suggestions that the cartridges used in the Enfield rifled weapon were lubricated with cow fat, pork fat or both. Since the preparation for loading the Enfield challenged the user to tear off the end of the document cartridge with their teeth, this would have polluted the Hindu and Muslim sepoys.
