The intruder wanted to impersonate Gerrard because he killed a cop and was moving from place to place to elude the police. And while moving, his dodging brought him to Aylesbury where he saw Gerrard and heard some men talking about him. So in order to hide his own identity he wanted to impersonate in some other person's identity.
