In the Sherlock Holmes storiesHis assistant Vincent Spaulding (aka John Clay) incited him to work at The Red-Headed League in order to have him out of his shop. Jabez Wilson went to see Sherlock Holmes when The Red-Headed League was suddenly dissolved which occured him a loss of salary.
