James Augustus Hicky claimed that "the Bengal Gazette was open to all and influenced by none" because of the following reasons:

-Hicky believed in the freedom of the press to be essential to a free government and upheld the rights of the subjects to voice their opinions on the government.-

His paper was free and independent from any colonial influence and in fact had often published gossip about senior officials of the East India Company working in India.
