In Chapter 9 of Anna Sewell's Black Beauty, Merrylegs is brought back into the stable by James, who says to him, "There, you rogue, mind how you behave yourself, or we shall get into trouble." According to Merrylegs, he is called a rogue because he had felt it fitting to teach a lesson to some young boys who had been riding him too hard and meanly.

When Merrylegs is returned to the stable, Beauty explains that the vicar's many children frequently come to play with Squire Gordon's daughters, Miss Jessie and Miss Flora. Their favorite activity is to ride the pony Merrylegs, which is an activity Merrylegs is equally fond of; in fact, he takes great pride in how well he takes care of the children. However, this time, as Merrylegs recounts, the youngest boys decided to cut sticks and use them to drive Merrylegs faster and faster. Merrylegs explains that first he just came to a stop to give them a hint that "we had had enough," but they weren't mindful of the hint:

Boys, you see, think a horse or pony is like a steam-engine or a thrashing-machine, and can go on as long and as fast as they please; they never think that a pony can get tired, or have any feelings. (Ch. 9)

When the boys didn't stop their cruel behavior, Merrylegs resorted to rising "up on [his] hind legs" to push them off his back, without injuring them. Merrylegs did this repeatedly until the boys finally quit their game and brought the pony to James. Merrylegs further asserts that James had really taken Merrylegs's side in the matter, for James was "very angry to see such big sticks" in the boys's hands and scolded them for ungentlemanly behavior.

Regardless of Merrylegs's roguish, meaning rebellious, behavior, Merrylegs insists that he takes the best care of the children he possibly can and takes great pride in Squire Gordon's complements of how good and trustworthy he is with the children.
