why did Joe Thomoson refers to bible? what did he want to convey to his wife?.....Please answer my question this is very important for me...please anwer freinds please

Joe told mrs. Thompson how Jesus rebuked his disciples, who did not help the little children and how he himself took up the children in his arms and blessed them. He reminded her of Maggie's dead mother and the loneliness, pain and sorrow which Maggie was undergoing at the moment. He also said whosoever gave them a glass of water shall be rewarded.
