John said so because he couldn't get any idea in his mind for writing the story and had reached the point where he was talking to himself.

Answer :
This question is based on the short story 'Virtually True' by Paul Stewart.
In the story, Jenkins had asked John Hallock for another short story. John had returned home and thought long and hard for inspiration but no idea had struck him. He had started thinking about other things and had reached such a level of frustration that he sarcastically said to himself "this writing business is delightful, isn't ?"
