Why did khadi and charkha become symbols of non-cooperation?

Gandhi Ji was main part of Congress and Congerss was following steps of Mahatma Gandhi to attain independence. Gandhi Ji was wearing khadi and used to rotate charkha which non- cooperation made their symbol of independence.
