why did king Louis 16 call a meeting of the estates general

King Louis xvi called the meeting of estate general on 5th may,1789 to pass the proposal of new taxes as france was in a debt due to many reasons like frequent wars...etc.300 representatives of 1st and 2nd estate came and 600 members of third estate also came .
