Lata started in an age where singers sang simultaneously with the band playing, in one go. Before that, recordings were done with the actors acting on the set, and singers and musicians performing off the set. Everybody had to get their part right. Every once in a while there have been instances of singers making a mistake in recording. Kavita Krishnamurthi flubbed a line in 'Hawa Hawaii' that remains in the final piece. Asha Bhosle sang over Kishore Kumar in a duet which was also kept in the final copy. It was a an old B/W song in which he was also the hero and quite cleverly covered up in the movie by incorporating it in the song picturization. Geeta Dutt does a sharp intake of breath which can be heard in 'Aaj Sajan Mohe Ang Laga Lo'. Lata has never recorded a mistake. She got it right every time. She was like a superstar that could maintain the things that made them superstars for decades. Her voice and talent didn't get old. She sold. It made sense to hire her.

There is no doubt that Lata Mangeshkar was instrumental in blocking many great talents, including her own sister at various times. But the sheer fact that she could do it for so long was initially made possible because she was a powerhouse of talent. Greedy and selfish? In my opinion- yes. she didn't NEED to sing every 2nd and 3rd rate song in every movie. But she could. She could do it in one take. She could do it without ever making a single mistake. Lata could deliver every time.

She was just that good.
