Literacy rate was boosted from 10% to 40% by the end of Renaissance.
However, this literacy rate depends on the location, social and economic status of the people.
Plenty of schools were opened in the parish churches, cathedrals and guilds, where students of various ages could learn to read and write.
Many young businessmen became literate to hone their trading skills; while some educated women started schools at their homes for the girl students.
Lots of people also learned to read and write from their friends or relatives, instead of attending schools.
