Lord Canterville told Mr. Otis that his little charming daughter, Virginia, had rendered a great service to his unlucky ancestor, Sir Simon. He and his family were indebted to her for her marvellous courage and determination. The jewels were clearly hers. If he took them from her, the wicked old fellow would be out of his grave in a fortnight and make him lead a miserable life.
