Lord Wellesley resigned because there was an increasing financial burden on the company due to his battle business, therefore he returned back to England.
Explanation:
- Under his reign, a subsidiary alliance system was introduced between native Indian rulers and the company itself. According to this, the company would save the native states from the French invasion.
- But in return to that, they need to pay the subsidy. But this was not accepted by many and in consequence of that led to the formation of a league by the Indian rulers against them which increase the military expenditure of Wellesley.
- This was condemned by the Britishers. Hence he resigned from his post and returned back to England.
