Why did Macaulay start English education in India?
Answers
Answer:-
Thomas Babington Macaulay was the one who started English education in India. English education Act was passed in 1835
Background:- The British had to learn various languages earlier, like Hindi, Urdu, Persian, Sanskrit, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and so on. It was hard for them to learn all the languages and hence they decided to introduce English as a medium of education in all provinces of British India.
Hindu Gurukulas, Pathashalas, Vidhyapeethas were places where Pundits, Shashtris, Acharyas taught. Mostly Brahmins, they taught Sanskrit, Local Languages, Literature, Maths, Vedas, Upanishads, Ayurveda and so on. Muslim Madarasas were places where Maulvis taught. However, both Hindu and Muslim women weren't educated and Dalits were denied education.
So English became a common language for education and administration in India. Here is an extract of Thomas Macaulays address to the British Parliament dated 2 February 1835
I've travelled across the length and breadth of India and I've not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I've seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such calibre, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they'll lose their self esteem, their native culture and they'll become what we want them, a truly dominated nation.
hope this helps you
