Salt was chosen as the central formula in civil diobedience movement because it was a commodity that every Indian could relate, be it poor, middle class and rich, dalits or brahman used salt alike.Mahatma Ghandhi wanted to make the people aware about the oppressive policies which in case was the ban of manufacturing salt.He had a symbol in salt which had the potential to unite each and every community in India which had a major shortcoming of the earlier Non-cooperation movement. He also choose salt to break the salt tax imposed by the British on the Indians.
