In 1930, Gandhiji declared that he would lead a march to break the salt law. According to this law, the state had a monopoly on the manufacture and sale of salt. Gandhiji and around 50,000 of his followers from different walks of life marched for over 240 miles from Sabarmati to the coastal town of Dandi where they broke the government law by gathering natural salt.

It became a mass movement, as this breaking of the law, turned into Civil Disobedience Movement, where in hartals, boycott of foreign goods, and later refusal to pay taxes was included. Consequently, people lost faith in the British government.

The British Givernment treid to supress it by brutal measures like mass massacres, torturing commons and others
