In the years following World War I, the Khilafat campaign was an agitation by Muslims of India who got allied with the Indian nationalists. This campaign in India was led by two brothers known as Shaukat and Muhammad ʿAlī and by Abul Kalam Azad. The main motive of this movement was to put pressure on the British administration to preserve the government of the Sultan of Ottoman as the Caliph of Islam. Congress leader M.K Gandhi joined the Khilafat movement to work and fight untidily for the goals of Khilafat and Swaraj. Both Gandhi and the leaders of Khilafat were trying to increase pressure on the British. Gandhi through the support of the Khilafatists wanted to ensure the Hindu-Muslim unity throughout the struggle.
