Hindustani was known by most of the people of the country and it originated in India only. So, Mahatma Gandhi wanted Hindi to be the national language as it represented our culture and was a beautiful knowledge spoken by majority of India.

Hindi wasn't declared as the national language because Southern-India didn't know Hindi well and thus protested. They knew English and not Hindi because from the starting, the British had lived in the southern-India this spreading the influence of English. So, English and Hindi, both became the major language.

He was convinced that everyone should speak in a language which is understood by most of the common people . Hindustani was not a new language. ... it was a composite language because it was enriched by the interaction of diverse culture. that is why Mahatma Gandhi preferred it to be the national language of India.
