→Gandhiji decided to launch a broad based Movement in India.

→But he was sure that no such moment can be launched without The unity of Hindu and Muslims

One way to do this was to take up the Khilafat issue.

→The first world war ended with the defeat of Ottoman Turkey. There were ruomours that a harsh peace Treaty was going to be imposed on the Khalifa of Ottoman Empire The Spiritual head of the Islamic world.

→To defend khalifa's temporal power Khilafat committee was formed in Bombay in March 1919.

→Young generation of Muslim leaders like Shaukat Ali and Muhammad Ali began discussion with Mahatma Gandhi about the possibility of United mass action on the issue.

→Gandhiji saw this is as an opportunity to bring Muslims under the umbrella of unified National movement.

→Gandhiji gave his consent to support this moment at the Calcutta session of Congress in September 1920,he convinced others leaders of the need to start an non cooperation movement in support of Khilafat as well as Swaraj.
