India was earlier consists of both British-ruled territories as well as many princely states. Hence, India become a Union of States.

1. Special status of uniyon Territory were given to those French and Portuguese rule territories.

2. Jammy and Kashmir were joined India in some special condition.

3. Small size of some states leads to their formation in Union Territory.

4. Special status has also be given to the states of North-East as they have a large tribal population, distinct history and culture.
