After partition, India had to face the problem of uniting the princely states and refugees, that is why many people feared that democracy would not work in India. The partition of India led to the arrival of around 8 million refugees in India from Pakistan. Moreover, the problem of uniting the scattered 500 princely states was very serious. The division of India on religion basis caused the death of many people in the riots. A vast majority of people who lived in the villages suffered badly and in cities, the factory workers and refugees lived in the slums. Overall, the main problem was of settling down the refugees and to convince the princely states to join the Indian union, thus many people thought that democracy would not work in India.
