When we became independent, we were the most miserable country in the world. A huge population even then, of which just 10% could read, and that too just in their own language. No health care to talk about. An average life span of under 30 years, and if you take off the wealthier class, the figure came down to 24 years. Not enough food even in good monsoon years. Droughts and floods every other year.

A country divided by religions. By languages. By castes and sub-castes. By cultures and sub-cultures. Feudal land holdings where the cultivators worked as bonded labor for generations, with their debts increasing from generation to generation.

The wise people of the world had given is 10–15 years of existence before being torn apart in an orgy of violence into a hundred small countries, eventually to be ruled over by others, including the much more cohesive Pakistan.

That was the situation our first leaders found themselves in. They were visionaries, they had their ears to the ground, they had lived among the common people. From this situation they crafted a republic and an inclusive, pluralistic country, they laid rock solid foundations on which we have been building to make India a successful republic and the world’s fourth largest economy.

After the partition India had to face many challenges and people were afraid that it might not be successful in emerging as a democratic nation.

Due to partition ,8 million refugees came to India from Pakistan.People had to find jobs and homes.

There was a problem of 500 princeley states ,each ruled by a Maharaja or a nawab , each of whom had to be persuaded to join the new nation.

Indian Population increased and their were divisions of caste between the faiths, languages and professions.

To the problem of unity was added the problem of development. Vast majority of Indians living in villages faced survival difficulties. In cities, the factory workers lived in crowded slums with little access to education and healthcare facilities.

India had already divided on the basis of religion, due to which many people died in riots.

Nehru and Vallabh Bhai Patel felt that the division of country on Linguistic lines may endanger unity and integrity of India.
