The Ninety Five Theses is also known as Disputation on the Power of indulgences. It was written in 1517 by Martin Luther (1483 – 1546) who was professor of Theology at the Wittenberg University in Germany.
It was written against the practice of selling ‘indulgences’, by the Catholic Church. An ‘indulgence’ was a payment given to the church, for getting pardon instead of a punishment, for sins committed.
Martin Luther opposed several practices of the Roman Catholic Church, during the 16th century. The Ninety Five Theses had a profound effect throughout Europe and is considered the starting point of Reformation.
